Start a Money Making Blog - Part I
Feb 6th, 2007 by Kalle
It is not a secret that many make their living from blogs. But what did they do to make their blogs that big and succesful? It would be a lie to tell you that it is something that you can accomplish overnight. It requires hard work and patience. But if you have the time and patience that is required, you will succeed. If you don’t earn $5,000 the first month and say “Duh, I did as you said and didn’t succeed!” you don’t have any patience. A blog doesn’t grow big in one month. Most big blogs has been online for years. You will have to wait for about 6 months before you see the money pumping in. If you think you got what it takes to do this, you will succeed. As long as you don’t give up you will - “Quitters never win, winners never quit”.
I will start this guide of with the very basics of starting a blog. Choosing a platform and choosing topic for your content. If there is anything in the article that you don’t understand, please leave a comment and I will reply.
Choosing platform - First of all you need to choose witch platform you want to run your blog on. There are many free blogging platforms out there, but if you want to be serious about blogging I advise you not to choose one of them. The main reason for this is that you will be bound to their service since your pagerank, your visitors bookmarks and everything is bound to the free domainname you have got from them. So if you choose to start your own domain name you will loose readers and pagerank. But if you for some reason still want a free blog I advise that you choose Blogger.
Instead of getting a free blog, I advice you to buy your own hosting and your own domain name to run the blog on. It is not too expensive to buy hosting and a domain name for a blog. It costs about $10/mo. and the domain name costs about $10/year. There are plenty of different Blog Platforms for free that you can install on the server, and the most popular one is WordPress, wich I use on this blog. Many hosting companies have a service called Fantastico, witch is a program that autoinstalls different platforms, including WordPress.
Choosing topic - Now when you have your own blog online you have to start writing articles. Choose a topic that you are very interested in to make it funnier to write. Remember to write as many unique articles and lists as possible as they attract visitors more then anything else. Some reasons for that is that they have a chance of getting to the front page of social networking sites if people think your articles are interesting, and unique articles often get blogged about if they have interesting content. An example of a succesful article is the one Matt Coddington wrote on his Net Business Blog February 3. Ironicly it was a list about why lists are so succesfull and it reached the frontpage of Digg yesterday. I don’t have any numbers of how many visitors you get for having an article at the frontpage of Digg, but it sure is many.
So write a couple of unique articles and lists. When you have done that you can start promoting, and not before because you wouldn’t like anyone to see your blog naked. Create some content, then promote.
